watching media in the living room with the SnaZio Net Cinema HD

watching media in the living room with the SnaZio Net Cinema HD

Since I got my Qnap TS-101 file server, I’ve been religiously backing up all my media files – especially backup copies of my music and DVD movies. But it’s always bugged me that I’m unable to access these in my living room – instead, it felt as if I was stuck with my computer, even for my entertainment needs. The much touted Apple TV is late, and it seems as if it won’t support Divx or Xvid-encoding (my preferred codec)…

Conversion work to Dokuwiki

Conversion work to Dokuwiki

Well, despite the availability of macros for converting from either MS Word or OO Writer to Dokuwiki, the work hasn’t been that straightforward. Quite a few things don’t get converted properly, so quite a bit of manual editing needs to be done. This will probably take a few weeks at least..oh well.. Also came across an online conversion tool that seems to produce somewhat more reliable results. Only thing though, is that I’d first have to convert the document to…

Getting started on that intranet wiki

Getting started on that intranet wiki

My workplace will be converting some documents into a wiki format, partly to make it more searchable. Alas, none of the open source wikis I’ve looked at has an easy-to-use WYSIWYG editor. DIY File Server to Qnap TS-101

DIY File Server to Qnap TS-101

Just a few months ago I put in quite a bit of effort reading up on the best/easiest way to set up a file server on my old AMD Duron 800MHz PC for the home network. I settled on installing Clark Connect and used it as a DIY Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. But today, I migrated my file server to the decidedly specialised Qnap TS-101 device. So what’s with the switch? Was it the lower power consumption? The much…

Zune

Zune

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Microsoft’s much-hyped Zune player hasn’t exactly been well-received…thus far. To quote an article: ” Speaking of basic functionality, what else does iPod/iTunes offer that the Zune lacks? Contacts and calendars, the ability to use the player as a removable drive, audiobook support, alarm clock, games, notes, clock and stopwatch, screen lock, photo transfer (with accessory), voice recording (with accessory), Sound Check, volume limit, gapless playback, fades, Party Shuffle, iMix, gift certificates, allowances, videos for sale, artist alerts, burning…

Crossing Over

Crossing Over

Intel Mac users have been able to dual-boot to Windows using Boot Camp, or even run Windows inside OS X using Parallels Desktop. Today, Codeweavers, known for their family of Crossover software enabling Linux users to run Windows applications inside Linux, has released a long-awaited beta for the Mac! So far I’ve tried installing IE6 in Crossover Beta 1, and it installs and runs without a hitch. Unlike Boot Camp, it doesn’t involve the hassle of rebooting, and unlike Parallels,…
