Ideal length and modes of comms

Seems like some younger folks claim that the email is going the way of the dodo. Personally, I can’t see myself having to login to a dozen social networking websites just to keep up with my correspondence. Instant messaging replacing email on the other hand seems more likely, especially with the popularity of using mobile devices to send short messages i.e. SMS. And the (im)patience with which many people now expect an immediate reply to their messages!

Don’t get me wrong though – I am all for shorter emails. In fact, the ideal emails should probably have the length of cinquains. If you’re sick of too-long emails and this really matters to you,  include five.sentence.es as your signature.

Harry Potter movies dissected

With the fifth Harry Potter movie out this week, and the final Harry Potter book launched next week, it’s only fitting that we take stock of just how much Harry Potter movies have evolved since the Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone in 2001.

See this video analysis on New York Times.

Make PDFs Online

Online PDF creation services are nothing new and I’ve never found them terribly exciting anyway, what with PDF creation being built into OS X and free (if basic) PDF print drivers freely available for Windows. And why bother uploading to convert when you can do it yourself by just clicking on the “Print” button?

But this week I’ve found PDF Online capable of doing some that OS X’s PDF creation tool isn’t capable of – creating a single PDF file from all worksheets in an MS Excel spreadsheet. Ordinarily I would have to export every worksheet as individual PDFs and then combine them with a free utility like Combine PDFs. But with PDF Online – just upload and that’s all!

With  multiple worksheets in the Excel file, PDF Online is a real time saver!
