An example of extraordinary insight

“Screw the iPod nano!” said the Motorola CEO at a recent leadership seminar at California.

When news of this first came about, most people attributed it to the heaps of praise that Apple’s new iPod nano received, compared to the lukewarm reviews of the iTunes-synching Motorola ROKR E1. Motorola has, of course, since claimed that his comment was a joke, and that it was taken out of context.

That hasn’t stopped Joy Of Tech from adding him to the list of “all-time greats” though heh.

My take? Steve Jobs must have made a call and said one word:

“Nokia”.

Firefox on the go

Mozilla Firefox has gained popularity in recent months because of its reputation as the faster and less bug-ridden alternative to Internet Explorer. But what if its simply impossible to install Firefox in your office PC due to draconian (but probably necessary) restrictions on administrative privileges? Fret not, for you can carry an installation of Firefox on your USB flash drive (also popularly known as thumb drives, thanks to pioneer Trek). Portable Firefox has been around for a while, but it only runs on Windows machines. So I was really excited when I came across this Cross Platform (Mac & PC) version of Portable Firefox.

Well, no more excuse NOT to be using Firefox then!
Get Firefox!

Open Source primer

Like this website, the school websites I helped develop all run on various open source software. But what exactly is open source software? It’s more than simply free, and open source software needn’t in fact be completely free. Confused? So was I, really. I suggest taking a look at this easy-to-understand primer – What Is Open Source.

Nano nano

Steve Jobs reveals that the iPod mini is the top-selling iPod model. No surprises here.

Steve Jobs then says the iPod mini is being discontinued. What??

But the new iPod nano is a truly drool-worthy replacement

iPod Nano

Yes, it comes in black too, like the U2 edition of the normal sized iPod! Drool drool.

Heck, it’s even slimmer than the iPod mini!

Will I buy it? Well, no hurry – must look out for lots of exhaustive reviews first! Already , this webpage (incidentally, also the source of the images above and lots of other cool images) shows the innards of the nano!

1985 gadgets

It’s amazing just how much technology leaps ahead in a mere 2 decades. I still remember drooling over the first computers with CD-ROM drives (yes, they were either Macs, or PCs that came with the ~S$1,000 Creative kit with a single-speed CD-ROM drive!)

First CD-ROM

Or how about one of the first “mobile” phones, the Nokia Talkman?

Nokia Talkman

Gosh, I think my back will break if I have to carry that around heh.
