Site migrated!

Ok, transferring my blog entries over to my new hosting service was not as straight-forward as transferring over my Moodle stuff. Someone really ought to write an easy-to-use plugin to backup/restore WordPress entries. Or if it exists..make it more easily available.

Didn’t bother to go through the hassle with my Mambo site though – simply re-created the entire thing, especially since it’s still rather bare anyhow.

Since I was re-doing stuff and my old photo gallery was sparse anyway, also decided to re-create my Coppermine Gallery using a Kubrick-based template so that the look’s consistent with my blog’s.

This was my first time installing Coppermine Gallery on my own btw (my former installation was pre-installed by Globat) and I was amazed by just how easy to install it was..just like it’s user interface.

Site migration

My new Focushub hosted website became operational late last night, so I immediately went about transferring some of my sites. First up was ELVLE since I’ll be getting about 40 students to use it later in the morning. So far, the speed’s been really impressive – much faster than with . That means I won’t have to cancel and ask for a refund …hehe..

The cpanel login is unlike what I’m used to with differenthost or Globat. Not as user-friendly than the latter’s, more certainly more powerful than the former’s.

Good thing Moodle‘s bulit-in backup and restore capabilities are easy to use and work well, so that didn’t take long to transfer, including the MySQL database.

Hopefully I’ll get the entire site transferred over by the end of the week.

Unbearable slowness

Urgh, Globat might be incredibly cheap, but the frequent unbearable sluggishness is really getting to me :( This can be a problem if my site gets real slow at a time when I need to do online learning with my class. So I decided to spring for a different host i.e. Focushub, which offers local i.e. Singapore-based hosting. It might not be as cheap as say differenthost but users in local forums claim that it is more reliable. Ah well, I suppose tme will tell whether this new hosting service will turn out to be better than my last two.

Focushub says that should I find the service to be unsuitable for my requirements, I can get a refund (pro-rated i.e. depending on how long I use before I send in the cancellation request). so long as I don’t sign up for the (discounted_ annual subscription, so I went for quarterly payment for now.

the “iCheap” arrives

More than a year ago, I decided that I needed a desktop Macintosh; alas, Apple’s consumer desktops i.e. the eMac and iMac, all offered integeated monitors, which I simply do not need. So I had to settle for an old used PowerMac G4 instead, and has since juiced it quite a bit with processor, memory and hard drive upgrades etc. Never stopped me from wishing Apple would release a cheap, headless, desktop Mac though. An iCheap, as I would call it. Today, Apple did the unthinkable by releasing its first sub-US$500 Mac ever: the Apple – Mac mini

I’m really impressed by the design and price point, though I’ll hold off comments on anything else till I actually get to play with one (apparently only available from 29 January onwards). Heck, I might even be tempted. :p Apple also announced a slew of other software upgrades, including iLife 05 and the new iWorks 05 (i.e. Keynote 2 and the new Pages). Am especially intrigued by Pages…will be keeping my eyes open for reviews.

2004: the stupid Version

Some really humorous video clips that were made for a BBC3 show called 2004: the Stupid version. I find the third clip especially funny :D but then I have been told that I have a warped sense of humour.

Can’t say I quite “get” the first or fifth one though? :???:
