Mac Envy?

And really, who can blame them? Really, it’s no longer true that processing power (i.e. GHz ratings) is the only thing considered when one decides to purchase a new computer: take a look at the growing popularity of the so-called Small Form Factor (SFF) PCs pioneered by Shuttle (which is probably inspired by Apple’s own Power Macintosh G4 Cube). Fact is, aesthetics matter too.

Now these folks have listed some modifications they did to make their Windows system resemble Mac OS X. Quite nice looking, I must say. ;)

Joy to my ears

After labouring over it for a very long time, I finally decided to replace my trusty but aging Altec Lansing ACS45.1 speakers, which I’d bought way back in 1999. While the speakers still work as well as they did on the day I bought them, my ears have since gotten more discerning where audio quality is concerned. While the bass is decent enough (for a speaker set its size), trebles and mids now sound too “muddy” to me.

I’d originally planned to purchase the much-praised Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers as replacement, but it turns out that these speakers have since been phased out, and I don’t know enough about its successor to purchase that. Anyhow, after some research, I finally decided on the Altec Lansing MX5021.

Here’s a picture

I’d planned to post side-by-side photos of the ACS45.1 and MX5021 to show just how much BIGGER the latter is. Alas, my two-year old nephew somehow managed to delete them off my Pentax Optio S (I still don’t know how he managed to figure out the “Delete” function on the camera though). “But how’s the sound?” you wonder. Well, to put it simply: my digital music collection now sounds so much more satisfying. (Google some reviews if you don’t believe me; better yet, go and test drive them yourself at a nearby computer shop that has them).

I also can’t get enough of their classy appearance (“polished piano black”) and the controller with the blue cool lights (no need to go to the subwoofer to adjust bass/treble levels! convenient access to line-in and headphone jacks! woohoo!).

Next planned audio upgrade purchase: better headphones to go with my Apple iPod. ;)

Back from the dead

A few days ago this site went off-line without warning. Turns out that the host had somehow neglected to renew the domain name…Anyhow, everything seems to be running fine now and I sure hope it continues that way! ;)

Getting the best out of GarageBand

I’ve been playing around with Apple’s GarageBand for a while, especially ever since Apple Singapore announced the MusicJam competition. While I sadly wasn’t able to make the time to create some tunes decent enough for that competition, I did have quite a bit of fun trying heh..

Anyhow, anyone familiar with GarageBand would have seen this pesky warning at some point

So what to do? Well, fortunately there’re a few sites that list performance tips for GarageBand. Here’re two of them:

How to Improve GarageBand’s performance on Your Mac
and
The GarageDoor – Improving Performance on the Mac

Check them out and have fun!
